Fit for Duty is one of our five core Safety Pillars—and for good reason. It’s about more than just showing up. It’s about showing up ready—physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared to work safely and effectively.

When we say “fit for duty,” we mean:

• You are alert, rested, and able to focus
• You’re free from anything—substances, stress, or distractions—that might compromise your safety or the safety of others
• You’re dressed appropriately for your work environment and job tasks
• You participate in a quality pre-shift briefing so you’re aligned with the team

Common factors that impair fitness for duty include:

• Fatigue from lack of sleep or rest
• Prescription or over-the-counter medications that impact focus or reaction time
• Drug or alcohol use
• High stress, emotional strain, or personal distraction

We also expect:

• No personal use of electronics in operational areas (cell phones, headphones, smart watches, etc.)
• Proper PPE and weather-appropriate clothing
• Participation in pre-shift stretch and flex routines
• Willingness to speak up when you or someone else may not be 100% fit

Remember: being fit for duty is a form of taking care. It protects you, your coworkers, our customers, and our reputation. If you’re not fit, don’t fake it—get support.
